Dental implants are quickly becoming one of the most popular options for tooth replacement. This is largely to do with how far the technology has come, with numerous innovations in materials and implant techniques in recent years.

The popularity of dental implants has even more to do with how successful they are and how satisfied dental patients are with the procedure. The Journal Acta Odontologica published a report studying patient satisfaction 8 to 14 years after the procedure. 81% of patients report high levels of comfort with biting and chewing with dental implants, and 94% are highly satisfied with their appearance after receiving dental implants.

So, what can you expect after receiving dental implants? Today, we’re going to focus on what you can eat and drink when recovering from your dental implant procedure.

First of all, let’s start with what you can expect immediately after your implant procedure. This will help give you some idea of what the entire process will be like. For two to three days after getting dental implants, you’ll experience a bit of swelling. You’ll feel a bit of discomfort as well as a bit of bleeding for the first 24 hours.

Many people imagine themselves living off of milkshakes for the first few days after getting dental implants in London. While milkshakes are not a bad food choice for those early few days, drinking them through a straw may dislodge the blood clot and slow down the healing process following your procedure.

This is a good lead in to what you should eat when you’re recovering from your implant procedure.

There are several good food choices available during your post-implant recovery period; we will outline just a few of them below. We’ve chosen food options that are highly customizable and can even be mixed-and-matched for new taste sensations.

  • Eggs

Protein is an essential element for recovering after a dental procedure, yet many protein sources, like meat, are difficult to chew. You should stick to eating soft foods after getting dental implants.

Because eggs are always soft no matter how they’re prepared, they are an ideal source of protein when you’re recovering. Even better, you can mix in other ingredients such as milk or cheese in the form of an omelet. You can also mix in additional ingredients, like beans or vegetables, to add even more protein into your eggs.

Macaroni and cheese

  • Mac ’n Cheese

Macaroni and cheese is classic comfort food for when you’re not feeling well. It’s particularly good for recovering from a dental implant procedure. It’s soft, but it also has calcium to help speed your recovery.

Much like eggs, you can customize mac ’n cheese in a variety of ways to make it more exciting. If you want something fancier, try grating different types on top of your mac ’n cheese. You could also dice up fresh vegetables to add more vitamins and nutrients. Spinach or broccoli are excellent choices. You’ll probably want to sauté them in a skillet first so they’ll be soft and easy to eat.

Add fruit and other embellishments

Oatmeal is another classic choice when people aren’t feeling well, and it’s also particularly good for dental implant recovery. It’s soft; it’s warm. It contains protein and fibre to help speed your recovery.

Oatmeal can also be added to in all manner of ways, helping you to get the necessary vitamins and nutrients to help your recovery go as smoothly as possible. Fruit, butter, and milk are all excellent additions to help you get the nutrients you need. As a bonus, it also makes the oatmeal delicious! Just avoid adding crunchy fruits or nuts that could irritate your wounds.

It goes without saying that soup should be a part of your diet when recovering from a dental procedure. That’s just the beginning of the story, however.

Soup doesn’t have to mean cans of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup, either. Almost anything can be made into soup, and it can be as delicious and as decadent as you like. For instance, consider this ginger carrot soup recipe from the Food Network’s US website:

Ginger Carrot Soup:

  • 2 tbsp. sweet cream butter
  • 2 onions, peeled and chopped
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 2 pounds carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 2 tbsp. Grated fresh ginger
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • Salt and pepper
  • Sour cream
  • Parsley sprigs, as a garnish

Keep in mind that hot or spicy food should be avoided during your recovery, so you may wish to reduce the amount of grated ginger. You can also use vegetarian substitutes for butter, sour cream, and whipping cream if you don’t eat animal products. Ginger soup is just as delicious if it’s vegetarian or vegan!

  • Crepes

As we said at the beginning, recovering from a dental implant procedure doesn’t require eating bland and basic foods.

Crepes are essentially soft, thin pancakes, made without baking powder. Cooking crepes is similar to making pancakes. You need to be fast when preparing crepes, however, so make sure your griddle is good and hot. You’ll also need to make sure your pan is well-greased so your crepes don’t stick.

A basic crepe recipe: 

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup flour
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsp. butter, melted

Your crepes can be as fancy as you like, as well. Consider adding strawberries or blueberries if you want something a little more interesting during your recovery period. It’s also an excellent solution for your sweet tooth that doesn’t include too much sugar.

Mixing And Matching

As we have pointed out, many of our food choices here can be mixed-and-matched to improve the variety in your diet during recovery exponentially. For instance, you could have savoury crepes with scrambled eggs, and goat cheese, topped with avocado pico de gallo. You could add mac ’n cheese to a breakfast scramble (eggs with sautéed peppers & onions) and top it with some panko crumbs before quickly broiling the mix in a cast-iron pan in the oven or a salamander.

Have some fun and experiment with different foods that you enjoy. You may even invent your own new signature dish!
